Dave Chan has built a life of public service. The son of Cuban and Chinese parents, Dave worked as a NYC police detective for 22 years. After moving to Oakdale, he served as police investigator at MacArthur Airport for eight years, where he was the union vice president.
Dave has used his experience in community policing to save the Vanderbilt Mansion from destruction by criminals and vandals. When the Town failed to protect the property, he became a founding member of the Idle Hour Neighborhood Watch Group. He and the other members patrolled the former Dowling College grounds nightly, boarded up windows, and installed cameras at their own expense.
As a former president of the Oakdale Civic Association and board member of the Idle Hour Beach Club, he championed efforts to improve quality of life, support neighbors, and enhance recreational opportunities for families. He continues to serve on the Suffolk County Police Advisory Board, making police and residents partners in creating safe neighborhoods.
Dave has helped raise $1 million for local causes and residents by coordinating 5K races. The races have benefited veterans, first responders, and the Oakdale Historical Society.
At Idle Hour Elementary School, Dave is a member of the shared decision making committee. The committee brings school teachers, administrators, and parents together to create a safe and nurturing environment for all children to succeed.
A life-long Republican, Dave’s decision to run as a Democrat representing Town of Islip District 2 is motivated by his desire to make life better for the residents of Haupaugge, Bohemia, Islip Terrace, Central Islip, North Great River, East Islip Great River, West Sayville and Oakdale.
“I believe in the power of the local government to make a meaningful everyday difference, from safer streets to sustainable development to supporting local businesses,” he said. “This is our opportunity to create the kind community that we can all be proud of.”
